
The role of a project manager is well-known – to manage the process of implementing change, ensuring that the goals defined by the project sponsor and key stakeholders are achieved within the given constraints (time, cost, quality, effort, technologies, etc.).
The job description of a programme manager is very different: You are responsible for the achievement of much wider goals that you then carve up like pieces of a puzzle, and you rely on a team of project managers to deliver each individual piece.
This presentation is a reflection on one person’s journey from project manager to programme manager–the challenges and the epiphanies while growing into this new position.

James’ professional career started 35 years ago in California as a systems programmer, contributing to a CAD/CAT program for high-frequency engineering applications. Today, James leads a PMO for a manufacturing company in Austria. In between, he worked as an international project and programme manager, IT consultant, validation and quality manager, primarily in the Life Sciences (pharmaceuticals, medical devices and fine chemicals) industries in Germany and Switzerland.
